The difference between meditation and mindfulness, and how it can help with grief

Have you wondered if Meditation or Mindfulness are the same thing? Both terms have been used interchangeably in the past few years. Meditation and Mindfulness are similar in many ways but are not the same thing.


Meditation is an intentional practice to improve on your concentration, balancing your emotions and increasing your awareness. Meditation practices are done with a specific goal in mind. For example, a loving kindness meditation is used to strengthen connection towards others and feelings of kindness.


Mindfulness is bringing your awareness to what you are doing. This can be practiced anytime and anywhere. You can add mindfulness to any activity. Mindful eating, mindful walking and even mindful brushing your teeth. Being present is another way to bring mindfulness in your life.


These two aspects of yoga can help you while grieving. As you grieve, you may feel uncomfortable with certain emotions. Bringing some presence in your life can help you release emotions you are holding on to. This also brings some compassion towards yourself. Holding space for yourself during this time is important Self Care, understanding that all your emotions are valid. Applying mindfulness and meditation, while feeling your emotions can assist when the pains of grief come in life.
